Key ideas for both sides
White
- Bg5, as in the top engine line, pins the f6 knight's defense of e4 and prepares e3 and Qc2.
- Against ...e6, a3 stops the check on b4 and keeps the knight on c3.
- Against ...g6, the engine likes 4.h4, threatening h5 to open the h-file against Black's king.
- Prepare e4 with e3, Qc2 or f3, since Black's f5 pawn and f6 knight both guard it.
Black
- 3...d6 supports ...e5 and makes White's Bg5 less dangerous, since the e7 square stays available for a bishop.
- 3...e6 heads for Stonewall or classical play and keeps the check on b4 available if White skips a3.
- If you play ...g6, be ready to meet h4 and h5 with ...Nxh5, as in the engine line.
- Castle short only after checking that White's h-pawn cannot open lines quickly.
Plans and pawn structure
With the knight on c3, White wants e4 to open the center against Black's f5 pawn. Bg5 and e3 support that, and Qc2 adds a third guard. Black's ...d6 and ...e5 plan fights back in the center, while ...e6 and ...Be7 lead to classical setups. The sharp line is ...g6 4.h4, where White pushes h5 against the fianchetto and Black must calculate ...Nxh5 and e4.

How to play against it
As Black, ...d6 or ...e6 is the calm choice. If you play ...g6, know that h4 and h5 are coming and that ...Nxh5 can be met by e4. Do not let White play e4 for free; keep a pawn or knight watching it.
