Key ideas for both sides

White

  • Answer the pin on b4 with Bd2, then e3 and Ne2 so the knight can recapture if Black takes on c3.
  • Against ...Nf6, a3 prevents the pin, then e3 and Be2 with an h4 push as in the engine line.
  • Against ...b6 and ...Bb7, White's h4 and h5 gain space on the kingside.
  • Keep e4 as the central goal, supported by Qc2 and f3, so Black's knight gets chased from that square.

Black

  • 3...Bb4 pins the knight and fights for e4. After Bd2, ...Nf6 and ...Bxc3 lead to ...Ne4.
  • 3...Nf6 is fine but allows a3, taking away the b4 square, and an h4 kingside push.
  • A queenside fianchetto with ...b6 and ...Bb7 watches e4 but invites h4 and h5.
  • In the ...Bb4 lines, follow with ...O-O and ...d6 to keep the center solid.

Plans and pawn structure

This is a Nimzo-Indian style fight for e4. Black trades the dark bishop for the c3 knight, then plants a knight on e4 supported by f5. White uses the bishop pair and plans e3, Ne2, f3 and e4 to chase the knight. If Black avoids the pin, White gains space with a3 and h4, and the kingside becomes the main battlefield. Black's central breaks are ...d6 and ...e5 or ...d5 depending on structure.

How to play against it

As Black, 3...Bb4 is the most coherent: it puts pressure on e4 and gives Black a clear plan with ...Ne4. If you play ...Nf6 or ...b6 instead, be ready for a3 and h4. Do not let White get e4 in with all pieces developed.
