English Opening: Caro-Kann Defensive System
The Caro-Kann Defensive System is 1...c6, preparing ...d5 with the c-pawn behind it. White can go for a Slav with d4, or grab the center with 2.e4, which the engine prefers, and steer toward Caro-Kann structures where the c4 pawn already sits on c4.

Key ideas for both sides
White
- 2.e4 is the engine's choice. After ...d5 3.cxd5, Black's ...Nf6 hits e4 and Qc2 holds it.
- Push e5 to kick the f6 knight back, as the top line shows with the knight retreating to g8.
- 2.d4 d5 gives a Slav. Nc3, Nf3 and e3 are the calm setup.
- 2.Nf3 keeps it flexible and can reach a Slav after d4 or a Réti with g3.
Black
- ...d5 is the point of 1...c6. It challenges c4 with support from the c-pawn.
- Against 2.e4, ...d5 at once hits e4, and ...Nf6 adds more pressure.
- Against d4 lines, ...Bf5 develops the light-squared bishop before ...e6.
- ...Nf6, ...e6 and ...Nbd7 give a solid Semi-Slav setup against Nc3 and Nf3.
Plans and pawn structure
If White plays 2.e4, the game turns on the e4 pawn. After ...d5 3.cxd5, Black's ...Nf6 and ...cxd5 aim to win the center back, while White uses Qc2 and e5 to gain space. In Slav lines, White plays Nc3, Nf3 and e3 and aims for a later e4, while Black develops the bishop to f5 or g4 and plays ...e6. The c6 pawn gives Black a solid base for ...d5 in all lines.

How to play against it
As White, test Black with 2.e4 if you like sharp play, or 2.d4 for a Slav. As Black, have a plan against 2.e4: ...d5 at once is the engine's choice. Avoid passive setups that let White build e4 and d4 freely.
