Key ideas for both sides

White

  • Against ...g6, play e3 and Nge2 so the knight can go to f4 and keep d5 under watch.
  • Against ...e6 and ...d5, take cxd5 and push d4 to isolate Black's d5 pawn.
  • Use h3 and g4 as a kingside space plan when Black's pieces are slow to coordinate.

Black

  • After ...g6 and ...Bg7, jump ...Ne5 to hit c4 and ask White's knight where it belongs.
  • Play ...e6 and ...d5, accepting an isolated pawn in exchange for open lines and active pieces.
  • Develop ...Nf6 first if you prefer to delay committing the e- and d-pawns.

Plans and pawn structure

The early g3 lets White choose between Ne2 and Nf3 later. In the ...g6 lines, White plays e3, Nge2 and Nf4 to cover d5, and Black uses ...Ne5 and ...d6 to target the c4 pawn. In the ...e6 lines, play turns into a Tarrasch-type structure with an isolated d5 pawn, where White's g2 bishop presses and Black relies on active pieces and open files for compensation.

How to play against it

For Black: choose your structure now. ...g6 leads to quiet symmetry where ...Ne5 is a useful resource. ...e6 and ...d5 gives open play but an isolated pawn after d4. Avoid slow moves that let White build both e3 and d4 without challenge.
