French Defense: Advance Variation, Extended Bishop Swap

The Extended Bishop Swap is 3...Bd7 in the Advance French, sending the bishop toward b5 before playing ...c5. Black hopes to trade the passive c8-bishop for White's good f1-bishop, while White develops normally and keeps d4 strong with c3 and Nf3.

Key ideas for both sides

White

  • Nothing forces White to change plans: 4.Nf3 and c3 lead to normal French positions after ...c5.
  • If Black goes ...Bb5, Bxb5+ trades the bishops; then castle and use the time Black spent moving the bishop twice.
  • The Na3-c2 regroup is standard here too, as all three engine lines show with Na3 and an exchange on d4.

Black

  • ...Bb5 is the point: it swaps the French problem bishop for White's best minor piece.
  • Follow up with ...c5 and ...Nc6, reaching normal Advance play with an extra option for the bishop.
  • Develop the g8-knight via e7, keeping f5 for it, and bring the b8-knight to c6 to double up on d4.

Plans and pawn structure

The engine lines show both sides heading back to standard play: ...c5, ...Nc6 and ...Nge7 against c3, Nf3, Be2 and Na3. The early bishop move keeps the ...Bb5 trade in the air for several moves, which takes some sting out of White's kingside play. White's long-term plan is still to hold d4 and use the e5 space. Black's plan is still ...cxd4 and pressure with ...Nf5, adding ...Qb6 when d4 looks weak.

How to play against it

Develop normally with 4.Nf3 and c3, and don't spend time stopping ...Bb5. If Black trades bishops on b5, recapture and castle quickly; your kingside space still counts. Keep the Na3-c2 regroup in mind to support d4 after Black exchanges on d4.
