Key ideas for both sides
White
- Support d4 with c3 and Nf3, as in every engine line, so that ...cxd4 can be met by a pawn recapture.
- Develop with Be2 or Bd3 and castle; the space on the kingside gives room for f4 or Qg4 later.
- Taking dxc5 at the right moment frees d4 for a knight, as in the 3...a6 engine line with 7.dxc5.
Black
- Hit the chain base with ...c5, then add ...Nc6 and ...Qb6 so that d4 comes under fire from several pieces.
- 3...Bd7 first is the engine's equal choice; the bishop can head for b5 to trade itself for White's good f1-bishop.
- Attack e5 with ...f6 once your pieces are ready; it also opens the f-file for Black's rook.
- The g8-knight usually goes ...Nge7 and then to f5, where it hits d4.
Plans and pawn structure
The center is locked, so play goes to the wings. White uses the e5 pawn for kingside space and keeps d4 alive with c3, Nf3 and sometimes Be3. Black works on the queenside: ...c5, ...Nc6, ...Qb6 and ...Nf5 all target d4, and ...a6 with ...b5 can grab space. Later ...f6 attacks e5 and frees Black's pieces. White meets that with Bd3 and castling, ready to recapture on e5 with a piece.
Where the engine's main line heads: French chain: d4–e5 against d5–e6. The French chain: White's pawns on d4 and e5 face Black's on d5 and e6. White has kingside space, Black attacks the base of the chain.

How to play against it
Strike at d4 right away with ...c5, or play 3...Bd7 first if you want the ...Bb5 trade. Don't let the c8-bishop stay buried forever: plan ...Bd7 and ...Bb5 when possible. Avoid ...f6 before your pieces are out, since it loosens e6.
