Key ideas for both sides

White

  • After 2...d5, choose a system: Nc3, Nd2, e5 or exd5, each with a different structure.
  • 3.Nc3 with Bg5, the top engine line, pins the f6 knight and develops quickly.
  • Against ...a6 or ...h6, use the extra time for Bd3 and e5 to grab space.
  • Keep d4 well defended; Black's whole French strategy targets it with ...c5.

Black

  • 2...d5 is the main move, attacking e4 and starting the real French.
  • The ...c5 break later hits d4 and opens lines for Black's queenside pieces.
  • Second-move alternatives like ...c5 or ...Nf6 avoid main theory but give White extra space and a free choice of setups.
  • Solve the c8 bishop problem with ...b6 and a bishop trade on a6, or by opening the center.

Plans and pawn structure

Black's main idea is ...d5 and then ...c5 against d4, while White keeps the space edge with e5 or opens lines with exd5 and Bg5 pins. The pawn structure depends on White's third move: the advance gives a locked chain, the exchange a symmetrical center, and the knight moves to c3 or d2 keep tension. In every case Black's light-squared bishop is the hardest piece to activate.

Where the engine's main line heads: White pawn d4, no e-pawns for White, no d-pawn for Black. White has a pawn on d4 and no e-pawn; Black has no d-pawn. White has more central space; Black's pieces are free and the d4 pawn is a target.
