Key ideas for both sides

White

  • 3.d5 grabs space and cramps Black, the engine's top choice. After the trade on d5 White keeps a cramping pawn there.
  • 3.Nf3 and Nxd4 reach a Sicilian with ...e6 already played, where Bd3 and Nb3 meet a bishop on c5.
  • Develop with Nc3 and Nf3 behind the d5 pawn, then play Be2, castle and aim for c4.
  • Keep e4 well protected; Black's ...Nf6 and ...d6 will test it after d5.

Black

  • Against 3.d5, develop with ...Nf6 and ...d6, then trade on d5 to open the e-file.
  • Against 3.Nf3, take with ...cxd4 and play a Kan-style ...a6 and a bishop to c5 or a7.
  • If White plays 3.Ne2, answer with ...d5 and steer the game back into French structures.
  • Play ...Be7, castle and put a rook on e8 to pressure the e-file once it opens.

Plans and pawn structure

After 3.d5 the game becomes a Benoni structure: White has space and a d5 pawn, Black has a queenside majority and plays ...exd5, ...d6, ...Be7 and later ...b5 or a rook to e8. After 3.Nf3 cxd4 Nxd4 the game is an Open Sicilian with Black's e-pawn on e6, so Black hits the d4 knight with ...a6 and ...Bc5. White's plans differ sharply: space and a kingside or central push in the Benoni, piece play and quick castling in the Sicilian.

Where it goes next

How to play against it

As White, 3.d5 is the most ambitious: develop with Nc3 and Nf3 and keep e4 solid. If you know the Open Sicilian, 3.Nf3 is a comfortable alternative. Avoid taking on c5, which lets Black recapture with the bishop and develop freely.
