Key ideas for both sides

White

  • 3.e5 is the engine's choice: after ...Nd5 play c4 and Nc3, then f4 for a huge center.
  • 3.Bd3 c5 4.e5 is sharp; the queen to g4 hits g7 and can force ...Kf8.
  • 3.Nd2 d5 4.e5 transposes to a French Tarrasch structure where White keeps the e5 pawn.
  • Gain space with tempo by kicking the knight from d5 and b6.

Black

  • After 3.e5 Nd5 4.c4, retreat to b6 and hit e5 with ...d6.
  • Strike with ...c5, as in the engine line, to undermine d4 once White's center overextends.
  • Against 3.Nd2, play ...d5 and ...Nfd7 after e5 for a normal French setup.
  • Keep pieces flexible: ...Nc6 and ...Be7 put pressure on e5 and d4.

Plans and pawn structure

After 3.e5 Nd5 4.c4 Nb6 5.Nc3 d6 6.f4 White has a four-pawn center like the Alekhine Defense, and Black hits it with ...c5, ...dxe5 and ...Nc6. White must develop the kingside before the center cracks. If White chooses Nd2 or Nc3 on move three, the game turns into a regular French where Black's knight sits on f6 and ...d5 follows. Then the usual French plans with ...c5 against d4 apply.

How to play against it

As White, 3.e5 Nd5 4.c4 grabs space with tempo; follow with Nc3 and f4 only if you are ready to defend the big center. A simpler path is 3.Nd2, transposing to known French structures. Avoid 3.Bd3 unless you know the Qg4 lines.
