Key ideas for both sides

White

  • After 8...Nxd4, 9.Nbd2 is the engine's move: after trades on d4, the knight reaches f3 and stays near the kingside.
  • Nf3 then hits the bishop on d4, and Bd2 or Be3 prepares to trade off Black's strong dark-squared bishop.
  • If Black plays 8...a6, 9.Kh1 steps off the a7-g1 diagonal, and 11.b4 later offers a second pawn to open lines.

Black

  • Take with 8...Nxd4. With the bishop on d7, Bb5+ is no longer a threat, so the extra pawn is safe for now.
  • Bring the bishop to c5, develop the g8-knight to e7, then castle; d4 is Black's best outpost.
  • 8...Rc8 skips the pawn for now and uses the c-file; after 9.Be2 Nge7 10.Nc3 Nf5, d4 is still under fire.

Plans and pawn structure

After ...Nxd4 Black is a pawn up with a strong piece on d4, but the king sits on e8 and the kingside is undeveloped. White wants to trade the d4 piece, then use the e5 pawn, Qg4 and a rook on c1 to attack. Black's plan is ...Ne7, ...Nc6 or ...Nf5, and castling. The d5 pawn is passed, so every trade brings Black closer to a good endgame.

Where it goes next

How to play against it

Take the pawn with 8...Nxd4 and develop at once: ...Bc5, ...Ne7 and castle. Don't cling to everything; if White trades on d4 and attacks, returning a pawn to finish development is fine. Avoid ...Qxb2 grabs that pull the queen far from the king.
