Key ideas for both sides
White
- Keep c4 ready: against ...d5 the top engine line plays c4 and e3, winning the pawn back with Bxc4 after ...dxc4.
- Against ...g6 or ...d6, Bf4 and e3 build a London setup that avoids heavy King's Indian theory.
- With ...e6, g3 and Bg2 lead toward Catalan play with pressure on d5 and b7.
Black
- 2...d5 and ...dxc4 hit the center fast; after e3, strike with ...c5 to free your pieces.
- 2...e6 keeps Queen's Gambit and Queen's Indian options open and waits for White to show the c-pawn plan.
- Avoid rare tries like ...b5 or ...Ne4 that give White an easy lead with c4 and Nc3.
Plans and pawn structure
Nothing is fixed yet, so each side's next pawn move shapes the game. With c4, White enters Queen's Gambit and Catalan structures where d5 and the long diagonal matter most. With Bf4 and e3, White builds a London and plans c3, Nbd2 and a kingside push with h3 and g4 in some lines. Black's plans are classic: ...d5 and ...c5 against d4, or a fianchetto with ...g6 and a later ...e5 or ...c5 break.

How to play against it
As Black, pick a setup that matches your repertoire against c4. 2...d5 is the engine's top choice and leads to Queen's Gambit play. If you play King's Indian setups, be ready for London lines with Bf4. Don't drift with rare moves that let White build c4 and e4 for free.
