Key ideas for both sides
White
- Develop with Nc3 and Nf3 and aim for e4 when Black allows it; the c4 pawn already controls d5.
- Against ...g6 and ...d5, trade cxd5 and push e4 to build the big center, as the second engine line does.
- Against ...c6 and ...dxc4, push a4 to stop ...b5, then win the pawn back with e3 and the f1 bishop.
Black
- 2...c6 with ...d5 aims for the Slav; after Nc3, Nf3 and a4, develop ...Bf5 and play ...e6.
- 2...g6 heads to King's Indian or Grünfeld systems, where ...d5 or ...e5 attacks the center later.
- 2...e6 keeps the Nimzo pin with ...Bb4 available if White plays Nc3.
- The Budapest ...e5 gives up a pawn for quick piece play; both sides must know its trap ideas.
Plans and pawn structure
This is a crossroads, so plans depend on Black's next pawn move. If Black chooses ...g6, White builds a center with Nc3 and e4, and Black hits it with ...d5 or ...e5. With ...e6, play revolves around d5 and e4, and the Nimzo pin with ...Bb4 is the main question for White. With ...c6 and ...d5, Black can take on c4 and White plays a4 and e3 to regain it with a lead in development.

Traps and pitfalls
Kieninger Trap (Black sets it)
In the Budapest Gambit, Black's queen on e7 pins the e2 pawn against the king. When White takes the bishop with 8.axb4, the knight jumps to d3 for a smothered mate.
Fajarowicz Gambit ...Nxf2 trap (Black sets it)
In the Fajarowicz Gambit, 6.g3 allows the knight to jump into f2. If White takes it with 7.Kxf2, the bishop takes on g3 with check and uncovers the black queen on d8 against the white queen on d1.

How to play against it
As Black, choose the defense you know best. 2...c6, 2...g6 and 2...e6 are all sound. If you try the Budapest with ...e5, learn the trap ideas for both sides, such as the Kieninger Trap, where a careless capture on b4 allows a knight mate on d3. Avoid rare gambits like ...g5 or ...b5.
