Key ideas for both sides
White
- After ...h6, the engine retreats Bc1 and continues Be2 and h3, keeping the bishop for later.
- Answer ...c5 with d5; Nd2 and Bh4 keep the pin and cover e4 and c4.
- Against ...Bg4, Be2 and Ng1 avoid doubled f-pawns and keep the pawn chain intact.
- Qc2 protects e4 and c4 and frees the d1 square for a rook later.
Black
- ...h6 is the engine's top move; after Bc1, ...e6 and ...c5 strike at d4.
- ...c5 at once leads to Benoni play with ...e6, though the bishop on g5 still pins the knight.
- ...Bg4 pins the f3 knight in return and prepares ...Nfd7 to unpin.
- After d5, ...Qb6 hits b2 and asks White to defend the queenside.
Plans and pawn structure
White's Bg5 aims to slow Black's normal central breaks. Black answers with ...h6, ...e6 and ...c5, opening the center while White's bishop has retreated. If White pushes d5, the structure becomes Benoni-like and Black's ...Qb6 and the e-file give play. If White allows ...cxd4 and recaptures with the knight, the position opens and the g7 bishop gets strong along the long diagonal. White's best chance is to keep the center closed and use the extra space.
