Key ideas for both sides

White

  • Recapture with 4.Nxd4 and follow with Nc3, Bf4 or Be3, Qd2 and long castling.
  • 4.Qxd4 is also good; the queen is centralized, and Nc3 and Bf4 follow quickly.
  • Gambit options include Bc4, the Morphy Gambit, and c3, the Bird Gambit, for players who want sharp play.
  • Use the space edge for f4 or g4 pushes when Black castles short.

Black

  • Develop with ...Nf6, ...Be7 and ...O-O, then use ...Re8 and ...Bf8 to pressure e4.
  • A fianchetto with ...g6 and ...Bg7 turns the long diagonal against the knight on d4.
  • Look for ...c5 to chase the d4 knight, accepting a small hole on d5.
  • Prepare the freeing break ...d5 with ...c6, but only once the king is safe.

Plans and pawn structure

White has a pawn on e4 against d6, a classic small space edge. White plays Nc3, Bf4 or Be3, Qd2 and often O-O-O, then f4 or g4 for a kingside attack. Black's structure is solid but cramped: ...Nf6, ...Be7, ...O-O, ...Re8 and ...Bf8 put pressure on e4, while ...c6 and ...d5 or ...c5 and ...b5 free the game. Black must avoid passivity; the d6 pawn is a target on the open d-file.

Where it goes next

How to play against it

As White, recapture with 4.Nxd4 and develop with Nc3 and Bf4 or Be3. Castle on either side depending on Black's setup, and use the space to start a pawn storm. Do not let Black trade too many pieces; the cramped side is happy with exchanges.
