Philidor Defense: Morphy Gambit

The Morphy Gambit is 3.d4 exd4 4.Bc4, where White develops the bishop toward f7 instead of taking back on d4 at once. White can regain the pawn later with Nxd4 or play for quick castling and Re1, while Black develops with ...Nf6 and ...Be7 and keeps things solid.

Key ideas for both sides

White

  • Castle with 5.O-O and play Re1, aiming at e4-e5 to open lines against Black's king.
  • Recapture on d4 with the knight when it gains time, as in the second and third engine lines.
  • Answer ...Bg4 with Nbd2 and h3, keeping the f3 knight and the pressure on the e-file.
  • Use the c4 bishop against f7 and look for e5 breaks when Black's knight sits on f6.

Black

  • Develop with 4...Nf6, then ...Be7 and ...O-O, keeping the extra pawn for now.
  • Pin the f3 knight with ...Bg4 and add ...Nbd7 to support the center.
  • If White takes back on d4, play ...O-O and the ...Nxe4 trick to trade pieces, as the engine line shows.
  • Keep f7 covered and avoid opening the e-file before your king is castled.

Plans and pawn structure

Black usually keeps the d4 pawn for a while, while White plays O-O, Re1, Nbd2 and h3, aiming at e5. If White regains d4 with the knight, the position becomes a normal Philidor exchange structure: White has e4 against d6 and a small space edge. Black's plan is ...Be7, ...O-O, ...Re8 and ...Bf8, or the ...Nxe4 trick to trade pieces. White must use the lead in development before Black finishes castling.

How to play against it

As Black, play 4...Nf6 and develop calmly with ...Be7 and ...O-O. Do not grab more with ...Nxe4 unless the tactic works. Keep the d4 pawn only while it costs nothing; giving it back for development is fine. Watch e5 pushes against your f6 knight.
