Key ideas for both sides

White

  • Play Be2 and O-O for the Quiet System, or Be3 and Qd2 for a sharper setup.
  • Use Bg5 and Qd2 after ...Bg7, then Bh6 to trade the dark bishops.
  • After ...d5, take on d5 and play Bc4, as the engine line shows.
  • Keep h3 in mind to stop ...Bg4 pinning the f3 knight.

Black

  • Play 4...Bg7 and ...O-O, then strike with ...c5 or ...e5.
  • Use ...Bg4 to pin the f3 knight and add pressure on d4.
  • Against Be3 and Qd2, play ...c6 and ...Qa5 or ...Ng4 to hit the bishop.
  • The ...d5 break can give an open game where Black's pieces are active.

Plans and pawn structure

White keeps a classic center with e4 and d4, with pieces on f3 and c3. White plays Be2, O-O, and sometimes h3 and a4, or Be3, Qd2 and Bh6. Black plays ...Bg7, ...O-O and then ...c6, ...Nbd7 and ...e5, or ...Bg4 and ...Nc6. The game is calm and the side with better piece placement gets the edge.

Where the engine's main line heads: White pawn d4, no e-pawns for White, no d-pawn for Black. White has a pawn on d4 and no e-pawn; Black has no d-pawn. White has more central space; Black's pieces are free and the d4 pawn is a target.
