Key ideas for both sides
White
- Play Bg2 and Nge2 so the knight does not block the f-pawn; f4 stays available as a later space gain.
- Castle short and keep the g2 bishop covering e4 and the long diagonal toward b7.
- Against ...e5, consider taking on d4 with the knight, as in 7.O-O exd4 8.Nxd4, for central piece play.
- If Black spends a move on ...a5, the push f4 and e5 gains space at once.
Black
- Develop with ...Bg7 and ...O-O, mirroring White's fianchetto, then strike with ...e5.
- After ...exd4, use ...Re8 and ...Nc6 to pressure the e4 pawn on the open e-file.
- The ...c6 and ...b5 plan gains queenside space while White's pieces sit on the kingside.
- Avoid ...Nc6 too early: the d5 push kicks the knight back to b8 and gains space.
Plans and pawn structure
Both sides fianchetto, so the long diagonals matter. White's g2 bishop backs up e4, and the Nge2 setup keeps f4 in reserve for space. Black's best plan is the ...e5 break once castled: after ...exd4 and Nxd4, the e4 pawn becomes a target for ...Re8 and ...Nc6. White aims for piece activity, a possible f4, and pressure on the d-file. Black can also play ...c6 and ...b5 on the queenside if White is slow.

How to play against it
As Black, castle quickly and break with ...e5 before White can play f4. Keep the knight on b8 until ...e5 is in, since ...Nc6 invites the d5 push. If White grabs space early, answer with ...c6 and queenside play. Watch for a quick f4 and e5 if you lose time.
