Key ideas for both sides
White
- Develop Nf3 and Bxc4, keeping e4 and d4 side by side as a strong center.
- Against ...Nf6, push e5 to gain space and kick the knight to d5.
- Against ...c5, push d5 for a space edge, as the third engine line shows.
- Look at f7 with the c4 bishop while Black's king is still in the center.
Black
- Strike with 3...e5, the top engine choice, then ...exd4 and ...Bb4+ for activity.
- The 3...Nf6 reply hits e4 and aims for a knight on d5 after e5.
- Play ...Nc6 to hit d4 with a piece and prepare ...Bg4 pressure.
- Avoid passive setups; the d4 and e4 duo grows strong if left alone.
Plans and pawn structure
White's big center gives space but needs piece support. Black's job is to attack it before White finishes development. The ...e5 lines open the game and lead to quick piece play, while ...Nf6 lines give White a space edge after e5. White's plan is Nf3, Bxc4, O-O and either e5 or d5 to cramp Black. Black aims to trade central pawns and use open lines.

How to play against it
As Black, challenge the center on move three with ...e5, ...Nf6 or ...Nc6. Don't play ...b5 to hold the pawn, since a4 breaks the chain. As White, develop quickly and use e5 or d5 when Black's pieces are badly placed.
