Key ideas for both sides

White

  • Follow with e3 and Bxc4, as every engine line shows, then castle short.
  • Answer ...c5 with dxc5 or keep tension with Qe2 and a rook on the d-file.
  • Watch for ...b5 tries to hold c4; a4 undermines that pawn chain at once.
  • Aim for e4 later when Black's pieces cannot attack the center quickly.

Black

  • Play 3...Nf6, the engine's top move, keeping options for ...e6, ...a6 or ...Bg4.
  • Prepare ...c5 with ...e6 and ...a6 to challenge d4 once White's bishop takes on c4.
  • Use ...a6 and ...b5 to gain time against the bishop once it lands on c4.
  • Avoid trying to keep the pawn with an early ...b5; a4 breaks it up.

Plans and pawn structure

The knight on f3 keeps ...e5 off the board, so Black's main break is ...c5. White regains the pawn with e3 and Bxc4, castles, and can choose between an isolated d4 pawn after ...cxd4 exd4 or a queen trade after dxc5. Black uses ...a6 and ...b5 to develop the c8 bishop to b7. Many move orders transpose into each other here, so knowing the ideas matters more than exact moves.

Where it goes next

How to play against it

As Black, develop with ...Nf6 and ...e6, then hit d4 with ...c5. Don't try to hold c4 with ...b5 too early. As White, recapture on c4 with the bishop and castle; there is no hurry to push e4. The structure decides the plans, so pick it on purpose.
