Key ideas for both sides
White
- Play 4.e3, the top engine line, then Bxc4 and O-O for steady development.
- The 4.Qa4+ check wins c4 back fast; after ...Nd7, e4 builds the center.
- Try 4.e4 to grab space; if ...b5, a4 hits the pawn chain at once.
- Use the open d-file after any ...c5 and dxc5 trade, with a rook landing on d1.
Black
- Develop with ...Nf6 and ...a6, then hit d4 with ...c5 before White plays e4.
- Against e4, ...b5 can try to keep the extra pawn, but a4 is strong.
- After Qa4+, block with ...Nd7 and break with ...c5 right away, as the engine shows.
- The ...Bb4+ check can trade off a bishop once White plays Nc3.
Plans and pawn structure
Black's ...e6 is flexible but blocks the c8 bishop, so it usually comes out after ...a6 and ...b5 via b7. White chooses between quiet development with e3 and a sharper center with e4. In the quiet lines, play transposes to main structures with ...c5 and a possible isolated d4 pawn. In the e4 lines, White has the center and Black must hit back quickly with ...c5 or ...b5.

How to play against it
As Black, finish ...Nf6, ...a6 and ...c5 without wasting time. If White pushes e4, react with ...c5 or ...b5. As White, the quiet 4.e3 is easiest, but the e4 lines give more space if you know them. Avoid a slow ...Nc6, which blocks the c-pawn.
