Key ideas for both sides
White
- 5.Nc3 is the natural move: it guards e4 and keeps every main Open Sicilian line available.
- 5.f3 protects e4 with a pawn, keeping c4 open for a later Maroczy-style bind as in the engine line.
- Avoid 5.Bc4 unless you know the gambit, since ...Nxe4 grabs a central pawn.
- After Nc3, plans like Bg5, Be3 with f3, or Bc4 all aim at Black's king or the d6 pawn.
Black
- Answer Nc3 with ...a6 for the Najdorf, keeping ...e5 or ...e6 as later choices.
- Against 5.f3, ...e5 kicks the knight, and after Nb3 the bishop goes to e7.
- Against 5.Bc4, ...Nxe4 wins a pawn; after Qh5 the engine's ...e6 holds.
- Develop with ...Nbd7, ...Be7 and castling, then push ...b5 for queenside play.
Plans and pawn structure
This is the starting point for the biggest Open Sicilian systems. White has a lead in development and the half-open d-file, while Black has a central pawn majority with d6 and e7. White plans quick development and a kingside attack with f3 and g4, or f4 and e5. Black plans ...a6, ...b5 and pressure on the c-file, often with a rook on the c-file and a knight on c4 or e5. Both sides attack, and timing decides the game.
Where the engine's main line heads: Scheveningen small center: Black pawns d6 and e6. The Scheveningen small center: Black pawns on d6 and e6 cover the central squares and wait for the right moment to break with ...d5 or ...e5.
