From's Gambit trap
In From's Gambit, White grabs pawns and then develops with 4.Nc3, leaving h4 uncovered. Black checks with 4...Qh4+, sacrifices the queen on g3, and mates with the bishop on g3.

How the trap works
From's Gambit is Black's sharp answer to the Bird Opening: 1.f4 e5. After 2.fxe5 d6 3.exd6 Bxd6, Black is a pawn down but has two open diagonals aimed at the white king. The bishop on d6 looks at g3, and the queen on d8 looks at h4.
White's king is weak because the f-pawn is gone. The diagonal from h4 to e1 is open, and only the g-pawn can block a check there.
- 4.Nc3? is the mistake. It develops, but it does nothing about the check on h4.
- 4...Qh4+ checks. The only block is 5.g3.
- 5...Qxg3+ is a queen sacrifice. The bishop on d6 supports the capture.
- 6.hxg3 is forced, and 6...Bxg3# follows. The bishop checks along g3, f2 and e1. The king cannot go to f2 because the bishop covers it, and d1, d2, e2 and f1 hold White's own pieces. No piece can block on f2 or capture on g3.
The tactical idea is a battery on a weakened diagonal. The queen and the bishop both aim at g3, so when the g-pawn blocks, Black can sacrifice and keep checking.
The exact moment it goes wrong is 4.Nc3. Before it, the evaluation is close to level. White needed the knight on f3, which covers h4 and stops the whole sequence. With the knight there, the queen check is gone and White can finish development.
For Bird players, the lesson is to treat the e1-h4 diagonal as a permanent weakness once the f-pawn has left. Developing the g1 knight to f3 is the move that guards it.
How White avoids it
White should play Nf3. The knight covers h4, so the queen check never happens, and the evaluation before the mistake shows a close game.
Questions
How does the From's Gambit trap work?
After 4...Qh4+ 5.g3, the queen takes on g3 with check. 6.hxg3 is forced, and 6...Bxg3# checks along the e1-h4 diagonal while f2 is covered by the same bishop.
What is the losing move in the From's Gambit trap?
White's mistake is 4.Nc3. White should play Nf3. The knight covers h4, so the queen check never happens, and the evaluation before the mistake shows a close game.
Is the From's Gambit trap worth playing for?
Yes for Black as a surprise. The evaluations stay near level through 3...Bxd6, so the gambit gives Black open lines without losing the game.
