Noah's Ark Trap

White wins back the d4 pawn with 8.Qxd4, and Black traps the bishop on b3. The pawns on a6, b5 and c4 form a cage, and the bishop has no escape squares.

How the trap works

The Noah's Ark Trap comes from the Ruy Lopez with an early ...d6 and ...b5. After 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Ba4 d6 5.d4 b5 6.Bb3, the bishop on b3 sits next to a chain of black pawns on a6 and b5. Then 6...Nxd4 7.Nxd4 exd4 leaves White a pawn down for the moment.

  • 8.Qxd4? is the mistake. Winning the pawn back with the queen gives Black a target to gain time on.
  • 8...c5 attacks the queen. The pawn is heading for c4.
  • 9.Qd5 attacks the rook on a8, and 9...Be6 hits the queen again.
  • 10.Qc6+ Bd7 gives White nothing, and 11.Qd5 returns.
  • 11...c4 closes the trap. The bishop on b3 is attacked and cannot move.

The tactical idea is a trapped piece. Look at the bishop's squares: a4 is covered by the b5 pawn, c4 is the pawn itself guarded by b5, and a2 and c2 are blocked by White's own pawns. The black pawns on a6, b5 and c4 form the ark that the trap is named for.

The exact moment it goes wrong is 8.Qxd4. The position was level after 7...exd4. One move later, Black has a large advantage, because each queen move loses time while the c-pawn marches. The cleaner answer is Bd5, which takes the bishop out of the cage before ...c5 and ...c4 can arrive.

For White, the warning sign is a bishop on b3 with black pawns on a6 and b5. If Black can add a pawn on c4 with tempo, the bishop is gone. For Black, the trap is a natural result of normal moves, so it is a fine weapon to know.

How White avoids it

White should play Bd5, taking the bishop out of the pawn cage before it closes. White can win back the d4 pawn later, and the evaluation before the mistake shows a level game.

Questions

How does the Noah's Ark Trap work?

After 8.Qxd4 c5 the queen must move, and 9.Qd5 Be6 10.Qc6+ Bd7 11.Qd5 c4 traps the bishop. The c4 pawn is guarded by b5, a4 is covered by b5, and a2 and c2 hold White's own pawns.

What is the losing move in the Noah's Ark Trap?

White's mistake is 8.Qxd4. White should play Bd5, taking the bishop out of the pawn cage before it closes. White can win back the d4 pawn later, and the evaluation before the mistake shows a level game.

Is the Noah's Ark Trap worth playing for?

Yes for Black. The evaluations stay level all the way to 7...exd4, so the setup costs nothing and the reward is a full bishop.
