Key ideas for both sides
White
- After ...d4, retreat the knight with Nce2 or even Nb1, then build with d3, g3 and a bishop to g2.
- Push e5 when possible to cramp Black's kingside, supported by f4 and Nf3.
- Against ...Nh6, play Nf3 and d4, keeping a big center while Black's knight is on the rim.
- Watch the e1-h4 diagonal; Nf3 and g3 both cover h4 against queen checks.
Black
- 3...d4 kicks the c3 knight at once and gains central space, the engine's top choice.
- Back up d4 with ...c5 and ...Nc6, then develop ...Be7 or ...Bd6.
- 3...Nh6 heads for f5, where the knight eyes d4 and e3, and keeps the center flexible.
- If White plays e5, the f5 square is a good home for a knight.
Plans and pawn structure
With the knight on c3, Black's ...d4 comes with tempo, so White loses time with Nce2 or Nb1 and plays a King's Indian setup with d3, g3 and a bishop on g2. Black builds a space edge with ...c5, ...Nc6 and ...e5 ideas and develops comfortably. If Black does not push ...d4, White gets e5 or d4 in and keeps more space.
