Key ideas for both sides

White

  • After ...dxe4, jump Ne5 and play Qh5 to hit f7, forcing ...g6.
  • Recover the pawn with Qe2 and Qxe4, as in the top engine line, but expect Black's ...c5 to hit d4.
  • If Black declines with a bishop check, answer with Bd2 and develop calmly.
  • Against ...a6, push e5 after Nc3 and Nf6 for French Advance-type space.

Black

  • Take with 3...dxe4, the engine's top choice, and meet Ne5 with ...Nd7 to challenge the knight.
  • Answer Qh5 with ...g6, then hit d4 with ...c5 while White's queen moves again.
  • The bishop check on b4 trades off White's good bishop and gives an easy game.
  • Develop ...Ngf6 and ...Bg7 or ...Be7 quickly; Black's king is safe after ...g6.

Plans and pawn structure

After 3...dxe4 4.Ne5 Nd7 5.Qh5 g6 6.Qe2 c5 White wins back e4 but loses time with the queen, and Black strikes d4. Black develops with ...Ngf6, ...Bg7 and castles, with pressure on the long diagonal and d4. White needs to keep the knight on e5 and complete development before the center opens. If Black declines the pawn, the game becomes a normal French with calm play.

Where the engine's main line heads: White pawn d4, no e-pawns for White, no d-pawn for Black. White has a pawn on d4 and no e-pawn; Black has no d-pawn. White has more central space; Black's pieces are free and the d4 pawn is a target.
