Key ideas for both sides
White
- After 2...d5 3.exd5 exd5 4.d4, you reach an open position with a symmetrical d4 against d5 center.
- Develop with Nf3 and Nc3, meeting ...Bb4+ with Nc3 to block the check and keep pieces active.
- If Black chooses ...c5, play Nf3 and d4 for an open Sicilian-type game, as the second engine line shows.
- Use the c4 pawn to pressure d5 so Black's center pawn never feels fully safe.
Black
- Hit back with 2...d5 at once. After the trades on d5, your pieces develop freely.
- Use ...Nf6 and ...Bb4+ to pin White's queen knight, as in the top engine line.
- 2...c5 is a solid alternative that turns the game into a Sicilian-style structure after d4 and ...cxd4.
- Do not let White play d4 and Nc3 with no challenge, or the light squares belong to White.
Plans and pawn structure
In the main line the center opens fast and both sides have a d-pawn on the fourth or fifth rank with an open e-file. Black aims for quick development with ...Nf6, ...Bb4+ and short castling, then pressure on d4. White wants to keep the c4 pawn as a lever against d5 and play on the e-file with a rook on e1. If White ever takes on d5 with the c-pawn, Black may get an isolated pawn or an active queen on d5.
Where the engine's main line heads: Symmetrical center: d4 against d5, open e-file. A symmetrical center: d4 against d5 with an open e-file. Neither side has pawn weaknesses, so piece activity decides.
