Key ideas for both sides

White

  • After 3...Nf6 4.exd5 exd5 5.d4, the game becomes an Exchange French with an extra tempo of knight development.
  • Meet 3...d4 with 4.Ne2 and follow with c3 to undermine the advanced pawn, as the second engine line shows.
  • Against 3...Be7, play 4.d4 and 5.e5 for a closed French with Ne2 and c3 to support d4.
  • Ne5 is a useful jump in the open lines, as in the top engine line with 7.Ne5.

Black

  • 3...Nf6 is the most natural move and invites a calm open game after exd5.
  • 3...d4 gains space and kicks the c3 knight, then ...c5 and ...Nc6 support the pawn.
  • In the open lines use ...Bb4 and ...Qe7+ to pin and harass White's development.
  • Transpose to main French lines if White plays d4 later; your knowledge of those still applies.

Plans and pawn structure

Because d4 is not yet played, White has freedom: d3 and g3 setups, or d4 and a normal French. If Black pushes ...d4, the knight on c3 must move and White plays c3 to open the c-file against the d4 pawn. If the center is exchanged with exd5, the position is symmetrical with an open e-file, and the fight is about piece activity and checks on the e-file. The closed lines with e5 give the familiar French chain.

Where the engine's main line heads: Symmetrical center: d4 against d5, open e-file. A symmetrical center: d4 against d5 with an open e-file. Neither side has pawn weaknesses, so piece activity decides.

How to play against it

As Black, play 3...Nf6 or 3...d4. Do not fear the exchange on d5: after ...exd5 you develop with ...Bb4 and ...Qe7+. Avoid passive moves that let White play d4 and e5 with an extra tempo on the kingside.
