Key ideas for both sides

White

  • After 2...Nxe4, play Nf3, Bd3 and O-O for quick development, then c4 to grab space against a knight on f6.
  • If Black declines with ...d5, push e5 to kick the knight to d7, a French-like space edge for White.
  • Against ...d6 and ...e5, Nc3 and Nf3 lead to a normal Pirc or Philidor setup with a fine center.

Black

  • Take the pawn: 2...Nxe4 is the engine's top choice, then ...g6, ...Nf6 and ...Bg7 bring the knight home safely.
  • After the capture, castle quickly and meet c4 with ...d6 or ...c5 to keep the center under control.
  • Avoid 2...d5 here: after e5 and Bd3, White gets a French-type bind with extra space.

Plans and pawn structure

After 2...Nxe4, Black is a clean pawn up and only needs to bring the knight back and castle. White's compensation is development: Nf3, Bd3 and O-O, then c4 and Nc3 to chase the knight and grab space. Black should not chase more material; the fianchetto with ...g6 and ...Bg7 plus short castling consolidates. If Black declines the pawn, White gets a normal open game with an extra center pawn.

Where it goes next

How to play against it

As Black, accept with 2...Nxe4. Then play ...g6, retreat ...Nf6 when Bd3 arrives, and castle behind the g7 bishop. Do not leave the knight on e4 where Bd3 and Nf3 can harass it, and avoid ...d5 as a reply to 2.e4.
