Key ideas for both sides

White

  • Recover the pawn with Qxc4 as soon as it is safe, then retreat the queen to d3 or b3 when hit.
  • Develop with Nf3 and Nc3 first if Black blocks with ...Nd7, so ...b5 does not come with tempo.
  • Aim for e4 later to build the classic d4 and e4 center once the queen is out of danger.
  • Do not grab more: the queen on c4 is a target, and every tempo Black gains on it adds up.

Black

  • Block with 3...Nd7, the engine's top choice, then ...a6 and ...Rb8 prepare ...b5 against the queen.
  • The 3...c6 block lets White take on c4 but prepares ...e5 to free the game quickly.
  • After Qxc4, hit the queen with ...b5 or ...Nb6 to develop with gain of time.
  • Strike with ...e5 when the queen and d4 pawn are loose, as in the 3...c6 engine line.

Plans and pawn structure

White spends two queen moves to win back the c4 pawn, so Black gets time. After 3...Nd7 4.Nf3 a6 5.Nc3 Rb8 6.Qxc4 b5 7.Qd3, Black has queenside space and White has the center. White aims for e4 and quick development; Black wants ...Bb7, ...e6 or ...e5 and pressure on d4. In the ...c6 lines, Black frees the position with ...e5 and the game often simplifies into an even middlegame.

How to play against it

As Black, block the check with 3...Nd7 or 3...c6 and use the queen's exposure to gain tempi. Prepare ...b5 so Qxc4 is met by a pawn hit. Avoid blocking with the c8 bishop, which leaves it stranded once the queen moves.
