Key ideas for both sides

White

  • 3.Nf3 or 3.Nc3 develops and keeps control of e4; both are top engine choices.
  • 3.cxd5 Qxd5 4.e3 gains time later with Nc3, kicking the queen from the center.
  • Watch for ...Bg4 and ...Bb4 pins. a3 and h3 ask Black to trade bishops for knights.
  • With the bishop pair and center, open the game with e4 or d5 once developed.

Black

  • ...Bg4 pins the f3 knight and adds a second attacker to d4.
  • ...e5 hits d4 at once and opens lines for the f8 bishop, especially before White has Nf3 in.
  • After cxd5 Qxd5, the queen is active; follow with ...e5 and ...Bb4.
  • Give up bishops for knights when it damages White's pawns or wins the d4 pawn.

Plans and pawn structure

The Chigorin is a fight of pieces against pawns. White aims to build e3 or e4 with Nc3 and Nf3, use the bishop pair and later open the center. Black wants quick development, pressure on d4 from the c6 knight and pins with ...Bg4 or ...Bb4. If Black gets ...e5 in comfortably, the game becomes open and lively. If White completes development and plays e4, Black's lack of a c-pawn break hurts.

Where it goes next

How to play against it

As White, develop normally with Nf3 and Nc3 and do not grab pawns early. Prepare e3 or e4 and be ready to answer pins with h3 or a3. As Black, play actively; slow moves let White's center roll. Trading a bishop for a knight is fine if it wins time.
