Key ideas for both sides
White
- 3.cxd5 is the most testing reply: after ...Nxd5, the push e4 kicks the knight and builds a big pawn center.
- If Black gambits with ...c6, take on c6 and keep the extra pawn, as the top engine line does.
- Nf3 and Nc3 are calm options that transpose to Slav or Queen's Gambit Accepted structures after ...c6 or ...dxc4.
- Do not rush the queen out. Nc3 and e4 will come with tempo against the d5 knight.
Black
- After 3.cxd5, ...Nxd5 recaptures, but the knight is exposed to e4 and Nc3.
- ...c6 is the gambit try; after dxc6 Nxc6, Black develops fast with ...e5 at once.
- Against Nf3 or Nc3, transposing with ...c6 or ...dxc4 gives a sound, familiar game.
- Look for ...e5 or ...Bf5 to hit White's center before it grows too strong.
Plans and pawn structure
The Marshall skips the usual ...e6 or ...c6 support of d5, and that is its weakness. After 3.cxd5, White builds pawns on d4 and e4 and gains time on the d5 knight, while Black has to find squares and hit the center with ...e5 or ...c5. In the gambit line with ...c6, Black trades pawns for open lines and quick ...e5, often ending in a queen trade. If White plays Nf3 or Nc3 instead, Black can steer into a Slav with ...c6.

How to play against it
As White, take with 3.cxd5 and answer ...Nxd5 with Nf3 and e4. Do not spend moves defending d5. As Black, be ready to transpose with ...c6 if White avoids cxd5. Do not try to hold d5 with pawns later. Develop instead.
