Key ideas for both sides

White

  • After 4...exd5, Bg5, e3 and Bd3 form the standard setup before White chooses a plan.
  • The minority attack is Rb1, b4 and b5, aiming to leave Black with a weak pawn on c6.
  • The central plan is Nge2, f3 and e4, often with the king castled long.
  • If Black takes 4...Nxd5, push e4 at once and meet ...Nxc3 with bxc3 for a big center.

Black

  • 4...exd5 is the main move: it keeps a pawn on d5 and opens a diagonal for the c8 bishop.
  • Build with ...c6, ...Be7, ...O-O and ...Nbd7, then reroute the knight via f8 to g6 or e6.
  • Use ...Ne4 or ...Bf5 to trade White's active pieces while White spends time on queenside pawn moves.
  • Avoid 4...c5: after dxc6 Nxc6, Black's center is gone and White is clearly better.

Plans and pawn structure

The Carlsbad structure decides the plans: White has pawns on d4 and e3, Black on d5 and c6 after ...c6. White's slow plan is b4 and b5 to create a target on c6 or d5; the sharp plan is f3 and e4 to open the center. Black answers the minority attack with ...a5 or by meeting b5 with ...cxb5, and plays for ...Ne4 and kingside piece play. Because the e-file is half open for Black, ...Re8 and an e4 outpost come naturally.

Where the engine's main line heads: Carlsbad structure (after cxd5 exd5). The Carlsbad structure, from cxd5 exd5: White has d4 and no c-pawn, Black has c6 or c7 and d5 and no e-pawn.

How to play against it

As Black, recapture with 4...exd5 and set up with ...c6, ...Be7 and ...O-O. Do not play 4...c5, which loses time and the center. Know your answer to b4 and b5 ahead of time, such as ...a6 or ...a5, and put a knight on e4 when you can.
