Key ideas for both sides

White

  • After 3...cxd5, follow 4.Nc3 Nf6 5.Bf4 Nc6 6.e3 Bf5 7.Qb3 to pressure the b7 pawn.
  • Use the open c-file with Rc1 and look for a knight jump to b5 to hit c7.
  • Keep the bishop on f4 to control the b8-h2 diagonal and the c7 square.
  • If Black plays 3...Qxd5, answer 4.Nc3 and 5.e4 to gain a big center with tempo.

Black

  • 3...cxd5 is the only good recapture, keeping the symmetrical structure and a solid d5 pawn.
  • Develop with ...Nf6, ...Nc6 and ...Bf5, copying White's setup move for move.
  • After Qb3, defend b7 with ...Qb6 or ...Na5 and accept a queen trade if offered.
  • Avoid 3...Qxd5 and 3...Nf6; the engine gives White a clear edge in both.

Plans and pawn structure

The structure is symmetrical, with the c-file open for both sides. Both sides develop: knights to c3 and c6, bishops to f4 and f5. White's small edge comes from moving first, so Black must watch b7 and the c-file. Plans include Rc1, Bb5 and Ne5 for White, and ...a6, ...Rc8 and ...Bd6 for Black. Many games reach an even ending if Black stays accurate.

Where it goes next

How to play against it

As Black, recapture 3...cxd5 and develop with ...Nf6, ...Nc6, ...Bf5 and ...e6, always checking b7. Avoid early queen moves, and do not copy White blindly when a check or a capture on b7 is coming. A calm, accurate setup holds the balance comfortably.
