Key ideas for both sides
White
- After 4...Bf5, play 5.Nc3 and Nh4 to win the bishop pair, as in the main engine line.
- Against ...Bg4, the queen jump Qb3 hits b7 and asks Black how to defend it.
- b3 and Bb2 is a calm alternative that supports c4 and develops the c1 bishop.
- Keep the queen on d1 or c2 until Black's light-squared bishop has committed.
Black
- 4...Bf5 develops the bishop before ...e6, the most active and most popular choice.
- 4...Bg4 pins the f3 knight and adds indirect pressure on the d4 pawn.
- ...Nbd7, ...e6 and ...Bd6 give a compact Semi-Slav-like setup with ...e5 to follow.
- Watch the b7 pawn: after Qb3, defend with ...Qb6 or ...Qc7 and stay calm.
Plans and pawn structure
White has a modest pawn on e3 and will develop with Nc3, Bd3 and O-O, aiming for e4 later. Black usually gets the c8 bishop out first and then builds the c6, d5, e6 triangle. The middlegame is slow and strategic: White looks for queenside play with Qb3 or b3, while Black prepares ...c5 or ...e5 to free the position.
Where the engine's main line heads: Black's pawn triangle: c6, d5, e6. Black's triangle of pawns on c6, d5 and e6: very solid, but it can shut in the c8 bishop.

How to play against it
As Black, develop your bishop before ...e6 with 4...Bf5 or 4...Bg4. Watch b7 once White's queen reaches b3. Avoid locking the bishop in with an early ...e6, which leaves you passive for a long time and gives White an easy plan with e4.
