Key ideas for both sides

White

  • After 3...Nf6, 4.Nc3 leads to the Three Knights main lines and the most testing positions.
  • Against 3...e6, the queen move 4.Qc2 sidesteps the Semi-Slav and keeps c4 protected.
  • If Black takes 3...dxc4, play 4.e3 and answer ...b5 with a4 to break the pawn chain.
  • A quiet e3 and Bd3 setup keeps the d4 pawn solid and avoids sharp theory.

Black

  • 3...Nf6 is the natural reply and keeps every main Slav system open.
  • ...e6 heads for Semi-Slav setups with ...Nbd7 and ...Bd6, keeping the d5 point rock solid.
  • ...dxc4 with ...b5 grabs a pawn, but it lets White open the queenside with a4.
  • The c8 bishop wants f5 or g4 before ...e6 locks it in behind the pawns.

Plans and pawn structure

Nothing is fixed yet. If Black plays ...e6, the c6, d5, e6 triangle is very solid and White plays for e4 or a queenside space grab. If Black plays ...Bf5 first, the bishop is active but White can target b7 with Qb3. White usually builds with Nc3, e3, Bd3 and O-O, while Black aims for ...Nbd7, ...Bd6 and the ...e5 or ...c5 breaks.

Where the engine's main line heads: Black's pawn triangle: c6, d5, e6. Black's triangle of pawns on c6, d5 and e6: very solid, but it can shut in the c8 bishop.

Where it goes next

How to play against it

As Black, 3...Nf6 is the simplest and most flexible reply. Avoid an early ...dxc4 unless you know how to hold c4 or give it back well. Decide where your c8 bishop goes before you push ...e6, since ...Bf5 or ...Bg4 is much harder to arrange later.
