Key ideas for both sides
White
- Develop with Nf3, g3 and Bg2, then castle and support e4 with d3, Nc3 and later the queen from e1 once the king is castled.
- e3 with a queenside fianchetto after b3 is an alternative setup aimed at e5 and the long diagonal.
- The engine lines are calm: White keeps the position flexible and waits for the right moment to play e4.
Black
- Fianchetto with ...g6 and ...Bg7: the bishop hits b2 and works with ...c5 for space in the center.
- Play ...c5 and ...Nc6 to take d4 and grab space; Black stands a little more comfortably in all three engine lines.
- If White plays c4, ...d4 grabs space and cramps White, as the third engine line shows.
Plans and pawn structure
Black's d5 pawn stops e4, so White's whole game turns on that square. White plays d3, Nc3, a queen move to e1 after castling, and finally e4, opening lines for the rooks after castling. Black, with ...g6, ...Bg7 and ...c5, plays like a reversed Leningrad Dutch and keeps e4 covered with ...Nf6 and sometimes ...d4. If White's e4 break never comes, the f4 pawn is just a weakened kingside. If it lands, White gets a kingside initiative.

How to play against it
As White, stay patient: Nf3, g3, Bg2, castling and d3 come before any try for e4. Avoid wild early pawn grabs. Remember that f4 has loosened the e1-h4 diagonal and the e3 square, so get the king safe before starting play.
