Bird Opening: Sturm Gambit
The Sturm Gambit is 2.c4 against 1...d5, hitting the d5 pawn instead of building a quiet Bird setup. It is dubious: White hopes for ...dxc4 and e4, but Black's best answer, ...d4, grabs space and leaves White's c4 and f4 pawns looking loose.

Key ideas for both sides
White
- After ...d4, play d3, g3 and Bg2 to build a reversed Benoni setup and fight for e4.
- Use the half-open f-file after fxe5, putting a rook on f1 once the king is castled.
- If Black takes on c4, e3 or e4 regains the pawn with a good center; that is White's best case.
Black
- ...d4 is best: it cramps White's knights and takes e3 and c3 away from them.
- Follow with ...Nc6 and ...e5 to hit f4 and build a big center, as the main engine line shows.
- ...h5 in that line is a bold idea: the pawn heads to h4 to break up White's kingside after g3.
Plans and pawn structure
After ...d4 the structure looks like a Benoni with colors reversed, but White has the extra weakness of the f4 pawn. Black wants ...e5 and, if White captures, a knight on e5 or play on the kingside with ...h5 and h4. White wants d3, g3, Bg2 and Nf3, then e3 or b4 to break the d4 wedge. If Black also gets ...Bf5 or ...Bg4 in, White's light squares become thin.
