Bird Opening: Schlechter Gambit

The Schlechter Gambit is 2...Nc6 after 1.f4 e5 2.fxe5, a slower version of From's Gambit where Black develops before trying to win e5 back. White can keep the pawn with Nf3 and d4, while Black hopes for ...d6 and fast piece play against White's kingside.

Key ideas for both sides

White

  • Nf3 guards e5 and covers h4, taking the sting out of Black's queen checks.
  • After ...d6, exd6 and then d4 build a strong center with the extra pawn, as in the top engine line.
  • Bg5 pins the f6 knight and helps White finish development and castle short.

Black

  • ...d6 offers more material to open lines; after ...Bxd6 the bishop eyes h2 and g3.
  • ...Nf6 and short castling bring a rook to e8 quickly, pointing at the e2 pawn and White's king.
  • If White plays e3, ...Nxe5 regains the pawn at once with an easy game, as the third engine line shows.

Plans and pawn structure

Black's compensation is time. After ...d6 and ...Bxd6, the bishop and queen point at the kingside where the f-pawn used to stand. White must play Nf3, d4 and Bg5 or e3 and castle before Black's pieces arrive. If White consolidates, the extra central pawn and the half-open f-file are lasting assets. Black's best practical chances come from ...Ng4 jumps, ...Qe7 and pressure on e3 and h2.

How to play against it

As White, play Nf3 first so h4 is covered, then answer ...d6 with exd6. Do not rush d4 before Nf3, since ...d6 and quick queen checks can embarrass your king. A calm d4, Bg5 and short castling is enough.
