Key ideas for both sides
White
- After ...dxe4, d3 offers a second pawn to open lines for both bishops and speed up development.
- Nc3 and Qe2 hit the e4 pawn and aim to regain it, as in the transposition with ...Nf6 and Qe2.
- Be3 and Bxd3 in the engine line give White active pieces for the pawn, but no clear attack.
Black
- Take with ...dxe4. It is the strongest move, and the extra pawn is easy to hold.
- ...Nf6 and ...Bf5 guard e4 and develop with tempo, so White's quick piece play hits nothing.
- After d3 and ...exd3, Black still keeps a sound extra pawn and the better structure.
Plans and pawn structure
Black is a pawn up with the better structure, so the plan is simple: develop with ...Nf6, ...Bf5 and ...e6, castle, then trade pieces. White's hopes rest on activity: Nc3, Be3, Bd3 and Qe2 with long castling, then a kingside push with g4. If Black castles short into a pawn storm without care, White gets chances. Otherwise the extra pawn decides.

How to play against it
As Black, take on e4 and develop with ...Nf6 and ...Bf5. Do not give the pawn back early by opening the center for White's bishops. If White plays Nc3 and Qe2, keep the e4 pawn guarded with ...Bf5 and ...Nf6 rather than grabbing more.
