Key ideas for both sides

White

  • 5.Bf4 develops actively; the bishop eyes c7 and the e5 square that the d7 knight would like.
  • Bg5 pins the f6 knight, and Rc1 with cxd5 later builds pressure on the c-file.
  • Take on d5 with cxd5 to fix the Carlsbad structure, then follow with e3, Bd3 and a queenside plan.
  • Watch for ...Bb4 and ...c5; a quick e3 and Be2 lets White castle before the center opens.

Black

  • After Bf4, ...Bb4 and ...c5 hit the center hard, as in the main engine line.
  • Against Bg5, ...Be7 and short castling lead to Orthodox-type positions with ...c6 later.
  • The d7 knight supports an ...e5 or ...c5 break, but it blocks the c8 bishop for now.
  • After cxd5 exd5, ...c6, ...h6 and ...Nh5 aim to trade White's active dark bishop.

Plans and pawn structure

Black has delayed ...Be7 and spent a move on the queen's knight, so the structure decides the game. If White exchanges with cxd5, a Carlsbad structure appears: White pushes b4-b5 against c6, while Black regroups with ...Nf8 and kingside ideas. If Black gets ...c5 in, the center opens and White's development lead matters. The c8 bishop is Black's long-term problem; ...b6 with the bishop on b7 or ...dxc4 with ...b5 are the usual cures.

Where it goes next

How to play against it

As White, choose Bf4 or Bg5 and keep developing with e3. Do not rush cxd5 unless you plan a minority attack. If Black plays ...Bb4 and ...c5, castle quickly and be ready to recapture toward the center with exd4. Keep an eye on d5 tactics while Black's knight is on d7.
