Queen's Gambit Declined: Cambridge Springs Defense

The Cambridge Springs Defense is 6...Qa5, an early queen sortie after 5.Bg5 Nbd7 6.e3. The queen pins the c3 knight and lines up with the g5 bishop on the fifth rank, so Black wants ...Bb4, ...Ne4 and ...dxc4 tactics while White must cover c3 and g5.

Key ideas for both sides

White

  • 7.Nd2 is the main antidote: it guards c4 and e4 and unpins along the d-file.
  • Trade Bxf6 and recapture on c4 with the d2 knight, then Rc1 for a pleasant open game.
  • With cxd5 White removes the ...dxc4 trick, and Rc1 with Bd3 follows.
  • Bxf6 and a3 with b4 gain space and kick the queen from a5.

Black

  • ...Bb4 pins the c3 knight a second time and adds pressure to c3.
  • ...Ne4 or ...dxc4 opens the fifth rank so the queen attacks the g5 bishop.
  • After Nd2 dxc4 Bxf6 Nxf6 Nxc4, retreat with ...Qc7 and develop with ...Be7.
  • Keep the c6-d5-e6 shell; it supports the queen's knight and the active queen.

Plans and pawn structure

The queen on a5 creates concrete threats against c3 and g5, so White's first job is to neutralize them with Nd2, Bxf6 or cxd5. Once that is done, White usually has a small space edge and plays Rc1, Be2 and castling. Black aims to finish ...Be7 or ...Bb4, castle and break with ...e5 or ...c5. The queen often returns to c7 after it has done its job.

Where it goes next

How to play against it

As White, play 7.Nd2 and do not leave the g5 bishop loose. Avoid lazy moves like Bd3 that allow ...dxc4 and ...Qxg5. As Black, keep ...Bb4 ready and do not leave the queen stuck on a5 after the threats are gone.

What is the main idea of the Queen's Gambit Declined: Cambridge Springs Defense?

The queen on a5 creates threats on two fronts: a pin on the c3 knight with ...Bb4 and an attack on g5 after ...dxc4 or ...Ne4. White must defuse these with Nd2 or an exchange before playing normally.

What should White play next?

The engine's first choice is Nd2, with cxd5 and Bxf6 close behind. 7.Nd2 covers c4 and e4 at once, which takes the sting out of both ...dxc4 and ...Ne4.
