Queen's Gambit Declined: Janowski Variation

The Janowski Variation is 3...a6 after 3.Nc3, a waiting move that prepares ...dxc4 followed by ...b5 and also stops Nb5 and Bb5 ideas. White can fix the pawns with cxd5, push e4 for space, or develop quietly and let Black show what the extra a-pawn move is for.

Key ideas for both sides

White

  • 4.cxd5 exd5 makes ...a6 look slow, since Black cannot use it to hold a pawn on c4.
  • After the exchange, Nf3, Bg5 and e3 give a normal Carlsbad setup with an extra tempo compared to many lines.
  • 4.e4 strikes at once; after ...dxe4 Nxe4, Black's ...Bb4+ and ...c5 lead to open play.
  • 4.e3 with Nf3 is quieter, but Black can answer with ...c5 and later ...c4 for queenside space.

Black

  • The point of ...a6 is ...dxc4 with ...b5, holding the extra pawn while White spends time.
  • After cxd5 exd5, develop normally with ...Nf6, ...Be7 and ...O-O; ...a6 rarely hurts.
  • ...c5 hits d4, and in the e3 line ...c4 grabs queenside space after White's Be2.
  • Against 4.e4, ...dxe4 and ...Bb4+ then ...c5 trade off White's central pawn.

Plans and pawn structure

Everything depends on whether White lets Black take on c4 with tempo. If White exchanges with cxd5, the Carlsbad structure appears and ...a6 is a small, mostly harmless extra move; White plays Bg5, e3 and Bd3 with a minority attack. If White plays e3 slowly, Black can push ...c5 and ...c4 to build a queenside majority backed by ...a6 and ...b5. After 4.e4 the center opens and Black's quick ...c5 equalizes.

Where the engine's main line heads: Carlsbad structure (after cxd5 exd5). The Carlsbad structure, from cxd5 exd5: White has d4 and no c-pawn, Black has c6 or c7 and d5 and no e-pawn.

How to play against it

As White, play 4.cxd5 and develop with Nf3 and Bg5; this removes Black's ...dxc4 and ...b5 idea. As Black, do not take on c4 unless ...b5 is safe, and meet the exchange with ordinary development rather than further pawn moves.

Questions

What are the moves of the Queen's Gambit Declined: Janowski Variation?

The Queen's Gambit Declined: Janowski Variation starts 1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 a6. Its ECO code is D31.

Is the Queen's Gambit Declined: Janowski Variation good for Black?

Stockfish 17.1 rates the position +0.33 at depth 20, which is a slight edge for White. In 779 lichess games from our sample, White scored 55.7%. A playable surprise for Black, but it gives White an easy Carlsbad game after cxd5.

What is the main idea of the Queen's Gambit Declined: Janowski Variation?

Black uses ...a6 to prepare ...dxc4 and ...b5, holding an extra pawn on c4 if White is careless. White's simplest reply is cxd5, fixing the center so the a-pawn move has little use.

What should White play next?

The engine's first choice is cxd5, with e4 and e3 close behind. 4.cxd5 fixes the center before Black can use ...a6 to support ...dxc4 and ...b5.
