Key ideas for both sides

White

  • 5.g3 and Bg2 put the bishop on the long diagonal, adding pressure to d5 and the queenside.
  • a4 stops ...b5 for good, as in 5.a4 e6 6.Bg5, at the cost of a hole on b4.
  • c5 locks the queenside and takes b6 from Black, though ...e5 then hits the center.
  • e3 and Bd3 make a solid setup, keeping the c4 pawn protected and aiming for e4.

Black

  • ...b5 is the main idea, gaining space and pressuring the c4 pawn.
  • ...dxc4 followed by ...b5 grabs a pawn and keeps it if White is slow.
  • ...Bf5 or ...Bg4 develops the light-squared bishop before ...e6 shuts it in behind the pawns.
  • After c5, answer with ...Nbd7 and ...e5, striking the center White has stopped guarding.

Plans and pawn structure

Black's ...a6 is flexible: it prepares ...b5, which can hit c4 or support a pawn on c4 after ...dxc4. White settles the pawn structure with c5, a4 or a quieter setup. If White locks with c5, Black's break is ...e5, and the center opens on Black's terms. If White fianchettoes, the engine line 5.g3 e6 6.Bg2 dxc4 7.a4 c5 leads to an early queen trade on d1.

How to play against it

As White, decide the queenside early with a4 or c5, and do not allow ...b5 to come with tempo on c4. Develop fast and keep e4 in mind as your central break. Against ...e5 ideas, keep the d4 pawn well protected.
